Intrigue has always surrounded the reclusive Dandridges, making them the most infamous family in Maine all down through the centuries. Their lofty residence of Deacon's Bench, a solemn mansion perched high on the pinnacle of Inland Waters, reminds passersby of the myriad of ghostly apparitions which still reside there in the 21st Century.

When Waverly moves into the vacant estate, those ghostly apparitions seem to be part and parcel of her purchase. From the moment she begins restoration of the estate, she encounters several oddities she can't readily explain away: voices only she can hear, scenes only she can see. She slips back and forth in time, when the mansion was at its glory, and interacts with members of the illustrious Dandridge family who built the estate in 1797.

But a horrific mystery surrounds Deacon's Bench, one Waverly must solve if she is ever to return to her own time.

**** 4 Stars from Scribes World!
CITY OF GRATEFUL NIGHT is the thrilling ride of a modern day woman, Jermyn Browne, and her passage from present day into London, 1888 - during the terror of Jack the Ripper. Her fascination may be what carries her into the 19th century by the most bizarre of circumstances. While in 19th century London, Jermyn meets the man of her dreams and then has the unfortunate opportunity of encountering Jack the Ripper and living to tell about it. Her journey will have you on the edge of your seat wondering if she will become the next victim or not.

Ms. Hoyt has woven a tale of the history of Jack the Ripper with the fictional characters of Jermyn Browne, her best friend Lettie Crawford and the love of her life, Noble Quinn. She has to my knowledge provided quite an accurate accounting of the murders of Jack the Ripper and presented a very visual scenic background of London during 1888. I found myself transfixed to the dark and damp London, as it must have been during that time.

I really enjoyed reading this novel and while I wished there had been a little more romance to the story, it certainly wasn't lacking in ways to hold my interest. Ms. Hoyt has written a wonderful novel here and I look forward to future stories from her.
